Complaints prompt toy store to stop selling Ouija boards

Posted by doctore0 on November 17, 2011

Hey, the Ouija boards do nothing… sheesh

When Lucy Weibe of Rankin Inlet went to the toy department in her community’s Northern store on Nov. 14, she was looking for a puzzle to buy as a gift for her friend.

But Weibe says what she saw on the shelf horrified her: a glow-in-the-dark Ouija board.

Weibe said the use of Ouija boards have been linked in Rankin Inlet to teen suicides.

“They’re no good. People may think they’re for fun games, but they’re for real,” Weibe said.

A Ouija board has a flat surface printed with letters, numbers, and other symbols, including the sun and the moon.

A movable, heart-shaped indicator serves as a pointer, which two players use to spell out messages or answer questions.

Usually a Ouija board has two rows of letters and numbers.

On the upper left of the Ouija board you can see the word “Yes,” and at the upper right, the word “No.” Close to the bottom of the ouija board you see the word “Goodbye.”

Today’s Oujia boards, made by the toy manufacturer Hasbro, have been on the market since the late 1800s.

But the use of boards and what’s called automatic writing to contact spirits has been around for thousands of years — in China, ancient India, Greece, Rome and medieval Europe.

While many consider the Ouija board as a harmless parlor game, some religions associate the Ouija board with demonic possession.

And others maintain supernatural forces are responsible for the movement of its pointer across the board.

Weibe believes the pointer “comes alive.”

“They’re not toys,” said Weibe, who, along with others in her community, believes the boards can unleash “evil spirits.”

Weibe and others in Rankin Inlet say some teens have asked Oujia boards whether they should kill themselves

Toronto psychic denies running from $1M challenge

Posted by doctore0 on September 7, 2011

She should have seen this coming. This will be interesting. 🙂

A Toronto-based medium denies she’s ducking a $1 million challenge from a skeptic organization to prove her powers.

Psychic Nikki was reacting to a statement put out Tuesday by James Randi, founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF), which has called on the Toronto medium to accept the challenge. JREF said it left a message with Nikki on Friday and had not heard back.

“I’m not refusing to take his test at all. I still need some information on it,” Psychic NIkki told CBC News.

“They just got a hold of me. There was a long weekend and he snaps his palms and I’m supposed to come running? They don’t even give me time to breathe.”

Nikki said she’d be in contact with the foundation in the next 48 hours.

Last week, after being contacted by CBC News, Nikki said she would consider the challenge, if she was available and that she would first need to learn more about the details of the test and the $1-million prize before agreeing.

Nikki’s offer that she may accept prompted JREF to issue a direct challenge to the self-professed psychic.

“You seem to be available for interviews, but so far, we haven’t heard anything from you,” Randi said in a statement released on Tuesday.

“If it’s true that you have faith in your own abilities, follow through and take us up on our challenge. I hope that you do follow through, and aren’t just misleading the media to get your name in the news,” said Randi, a noted magician and skeptic.

Florida family charged in $40 million psychic scam

Posted by doctore0 on September 2, 2011

One fine day all religions will face the same charge 🙂
——
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Rose Marks and her family of fortunetellers offered hope, but prosecutors said it came with a steep price.

The Florida family claimed to confer with gods, spirits and even Michael the Archangel to cure diseases and break curses, asking for and accepting jewelry, gold coins and luxury cars in return.

In all, authorities said, the family amassed a $40 million fortune from a psychic scam dating back 20 years.

They used “magicians’ tricks” to frighten victims, who lived as far away as Denmark and Japan, to give them the money, prosecutors said. The victims included a best-selling author who gave $20 million.

Marks, 60, and eight family members pleaded not guilty last week. Their lawyers said they believe their Gypsy religion gave them the ability to heal psychically and that business was legitimate.

“They try to do that and they get paid for it,” defense attorney Fred Schwartz said.

Marks moved her family to Florida 13 years ago. Her children and grandchildren moved into her posh, waterfront home in Fort Lauderdale after her husband died of brain cancer in 2006.

Often using the alter ego “Joyce Michael,” the women of the family extracted valuables from their victims to support their lavish lifestyle, prosecutors said. Neighbors saw luxury cars coming and going, but saw little of the family.

Psychic loses police harassment court claim

Posted by doctore0 on August 20, 2011

He didn’t see that coming …

Looks like a psychic, acts like a psychic , it must be a fool!

A psychic who claimed he was being harassed by police officers after being sacked by the force has had his case thrown out of court.

Alan Power, 64, was briefly employed by Greater Manchester Police training special constables – but was sacked in October 2008 after bosses learned he had tried to involve officers in psychic research.

Managers said his interests in the psychic field were ‘not compatible’ with his employment at GMP.

He attempted to sue the force for unfair dismissal but his case was rejected by the Civil Appeal Court in London.

In his latest court appearance at a Manchester employment tribunal, Mr Power claimed he was being harassed and victimised by three officers from GMP.

He said the harassment was in relation to a High Court libel action he was fighting over an email in which he alleges he was libelled by a senior GMP officer.

Mr Power claimed the three officers were harassing him because they had been named as witnesses against him in the case.

But Spencer Keen, acting on behalf of GMP, claimed that Mr Power’s case was ‘unreasonable and vexatious.’

“Mr Power hasn’t been able to produce any evidence to suggest the respondents subjected him to any mistreatment whatsoever,” he said.

“It was clear from his cross-examination that Mr Power didn’t really have any evidence that he was being unfavourably treated
