Happy Valley Pastor Mike Sperou convicted of child sex abuse, sentenced to 20 years in prison

Posted by doctore0 on May 1, 2015

Pastor Mike Sperou was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing a girl who grew up in his Happy Valley church.

Two sheriff’s deputies led Sperou away in handcuffs while several supporters sobbed. He didn’t address the court.

A Multnomah County jury of six women and six men had convicted Sperou moments earlier on three counts of first-degree sexual penetration of a person under the age of 12. The jury deliberated just 2½ hours after hearing 12 days of conflicting testimony.

Circuit Judge Cheryl A. Albrecht also ordered Sperou, 64, to register as a sex offender and to pay the victim $20,000 for her ongoing counseling and mental health therapy. When Sperou is released from prison, he must remain under supervision for an additional 10 years.

Victim Shannon Clark said by phone that she was “thrilled” with the sentence, for her the closing chapter in a long legal struggle. Clark was among seven young girls who complained in 1997 that Sperou had abused her while her family was part of the North Clackamas Bible Community. After a Portland police investigation, prosecutors declined to file charges and dropped the case.

But the case was reinvestigated in 2013 and 2014, leading to new charges against Sperou based on new allegations.

“I am very happy that someone believed me — after all this time,” said Clark, 29.

Deputy District Attorney Chris Mascal said she was pleased that the jury saw Sperou’s pattern of abusing helpless children – now adult women.

Atheists sue Lackawanna County transit system over refusal to run ad

Posted by doctore0 on April 29, 2015

A Northeastern Pennsylvania transit system permitted churches to advertise on the sides of its buses but then refused to allow a group that doesn’t believe in God to place an ad containing the word “atheists,” fearing it would offend riders, according to a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday.

The County of Lackawanna Transit System repeatedly rejected the ads sought by the Wilkes-Barre based Northeastern Pennsylvania Freethought Society, telling the group it doesn’t permit advertising space to be used as a forum for public debate. The transit system also told the group its ad might alienate riders and hurt revenue, according to the lawsuit, filed in Scranton.

“It’s hard to advertise effectively if we’re not allowed to use the word ‘atheists’ to say who the NEPA Freethought Society’s members are or who we’re trying to reach,” Justin Vacula, the group’s co-organizer and spokesperson, said in a statement distributed by the ACLU.

“We just want to be treated fairly and allowed the same opportunity to advertise that COLTS has given other groups for years,” said Vacula, 26, of Wilkes-Barre.

The transit system allowed several churches — as well as a political candidate and a blog that linked to anti-Semitic, Holocaust denial and white supremacist websites — to advertise before the Freethought Society first tried placing its ad in 2012, the suit said.

Atheist sets up ‘reason station’ in Michigan city hall

Posted by doctore0 on April 29, 2015

DETROIT — A year after being denied an application to have a “reason station” inside a Michigan city hall, atheist Douglas Marshall set up the station for the first time Tuesday thanks to a federal court victory in February.

His station — a table with literature, a sign on an easel and chairs for himself and two volunteers — was situated in the Warren City Hall atrium in front of the library. Paces away, on the other side of the library entrance, stood a prayer station that has been allowed in City Hall since 2009.

Marshall, 69, of Warren, Mich., said he was happy he could establish the reason station from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“I feel it’s appropriate that an alternative is being offered,” said Marshall.

He sued the city and Mayor Jim Fouts last summer after his request to set up the reason station was denied. Marshall said the table would promote free thought, use of reason and logic and separation of church and state.
