Infants Contract Herpes From Oral Suction During Jewish Circumcision

Posted by Mr DoctorE on July 30, 2014

“Two New York City infants were diagnosed with herpes after undergoing a traditional Orthodox Jewish circumcision, NBC4 reports.

According to the Health Department, both babies developed lesions on their genitals shortly after having the metzitzah b’peh, a practice in which the mohel — a person trained to perform the “covenant of circumcision” — uses a direct oral suction technique to swab blood from the infant’s penis, was performed on them.

Warren atheist sues to set up alternative to prayer station at city hall

Posted by Mr DoctorE on July 24, 2014

A Warren atheist filed a federal lawsuit today saying his free speech rights were violated when Warren Mayor Jim Fouts turned down his request to place what he called a “reason station” inside city hall, where a prayer station has existed for years.

Douglas Marshall, a member of Freedom From Religion, made a request with the city in April to put up a table inside the atrium of city hall to promote free thought, use of reason and logic and separation of church and state. Fouts denied the request, saying it would disrupt the prayer station in violation of the constitutional right to freedom of religion.

The lawsuit against Fouts and the city was filed in U.S. District Court by the American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and Freedom From Religion Foundation on behalf of Marshall.

It seeks a preliminary injunction requiring the city and Fouts to allow Marshall to operate his proposed reason station in the atrium. If the court decides the prayer station, which a local church group has operated in the atrium since 2009, represents government speech, it should issue a preliminary injunction prohibiting its continued operation, according to court documents.

IRS agrees to monitor churches for electioneering

Posted by Mr DoctorE on July 23, 2014

The Internal Revenue Service said it will monitor churches and other houses of worship for electioneering in a settlement reached with an atheist group.

The settlement was reached Friday (July 18) in federal court in Madison, Wis., where the initial lawsuit was filed in 2012 by the Freedom from Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based atheist advocacy group that claims 20,000 members nationwide.

The suit alleged the IRS routinely ignored complaints by the FFRF and others about churches promoting political candidates, issues or proposed legislation. As part of their tax-exempt status, churches and other religious groups are prohibited from engaging in partisan political activity.

Researchers: Children exposed to religion have difficulty distinguishing fact from fiction

Posted by Mr DoctorE on July 19, 2014

santaA study published in the July issue of Cognitive Science determined that children who are not exposed to religious stories are better able to tell that characters in “fantastical stories” are fictional — whereas children raised in a religious environment even “approach unfamiliar, fantastical stories flexibly.”

In “Judgments About Fact and Fiction by Children From Religious and Nonreligious Backgrounds,” Kathleen Corriveau, Eva Chen, and Paul Harris demonstrate that children typically have a “sensitivity to the implausible or magical elements in a narrative,” and can determine whether the characters in the narrative are real or fictional by references to fantastical elements within the narrative, such as “invisible sails” or “a sword that protects you from danger every time.”

However, children raised in households in which religious narratives are frequently encountered do not treat those narratives with the same skepticism. The authors believed that these children would “think of them as akin to fairy tales,” judging “the events described in them as implausible or magical and conclude that the protagonists in such narratives are only pretend.”

And yet, “this prediction is likely to be wrong,” because “with appropriate testimony from adults” in religious households, children “will conceive of the protagonist in such narratives as a real person — even if the narrative includes impossible events.

Nigeria atheist Bala ‘deemed mentally ill in Kano state’

Posted by Mr DoctorE on June 25, 2014

The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

A Nigerian man has been sent to a mental institute in Kano state after he declared that he did not believe in God, according to a humanist charity.

Mubarak Bala, 29, is said to have been forcibly medicated by his Muslim relatives, despite being given a clean bill of health by a doctor.

The International Humanist and Ethical Union say a Lagos-based group has asked a lawyer to take up his case.

Kano is a mainly Muslim state and adopted Sharia (Islamic law) in 2000.

The IHEU says that when Mr Bala told relatives he did not believe in God, they asked a doctor if he was mentally ill.

Despite being told that he was not unwell, Mr Bala’s family then went to a second doctor, who declared that his atheism was a side-effect of suffering a personality change, the group says

Christian Homeschoolers Run ‘Concentration Camp’

Posted by Mr DoctorE on June 10, 2014

“According to police, the girls were home schooled, and subjected to strict punishment that included hour-long running sessions, memorization of Bible verses, and spankings with a wooden paddle. The couple also forced the girls to sleep in a backyard tent either nude or only in a diaper.

Police spokeswoman Amanda Jacinto said the oldest teenage girl remained in a local hospital due to her emaciated condition, and that the five-foot-tall (1.52-meter) teen had weighed just 60 pounds (27 kg) upon admission.”
