Atheist Display Will Accompany Nativity At Courthouse

Posted by doctore0 on October 1, 2015

(Brookville, Ind.) – The Freedom From Religion Foundation is now adhering to the idiom “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

Just last week, a federal judge dismissed the Wisconsin-based atheist organization’s December 2014 lawsuit demanding removal of the Christian Nativity display from the Franklin County Courthouse lawn in Brookville. The privately owned display has appeared on the county government owned property each Christmas season for the past 50 years.

U.S. District Court Judge Tonya Walton Pratt pointed to Franklin County’s new content-neutral application process for private displays at the courthouse as the main factor in dismissing the suit. County commissioners acted to unanimously pass the ordinance following the lawsuit from the FFRF and the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana last November.

Despite the recent loss in court, the foundation is not going away quietly. The atheists have been granted approval to display a Bill of Rights Nativity and a Winter Solstice banner on the courthouse lawn near the Christian Nativity this holiday season.

Neil deGrasse Tyson Angers Christians with Christmas Tweets

Posted by doctore0 on December 30, 2014

“Neil deGrasse Tyson undoubtedly hopes you and your family are having a wonderful holiday season. Nevertheless, a series of tweets sent by the astrophysicist on Christmas have incensed some, as he provocatively questioned both the significance of the holiday — and the reason we celebrate it.

Atheist group saves Christmas for Oklahoma family claiming poor treatment by church

Posted by doctore0 on January 2, 2014

Happy new year!

An Oklahoma mother said atheists saved Christmas for her family after she was treated poorly by a church charity.

Tiffany Wait said she and her husband went to Bible Baptist Church’s Toy Shop on Christmas morning to get gifts for their 7-month-old son but were turned away when she declined to hand over the baby for a volunteer to hold.

“I am poor and would not be able to celebrate Christmas this year without their charity,” Wait said. “I went last year and it was a life saver. This year however, I was treated shockingly bad.”

She said she didn’t want to hand over her baby, who doesn’t like strangers, but the volunteer insisted she had to or the family couldn’t participate in the giveaway.

“I stood there, fighting back tears and asked, ‘You would turn a baby away on Christmas,’” Wait said.

But she said the volunteers refused to make an exception, and Wait said one woman tried to take the child away from her.

Another woman eventually passed a toy to the front of the line and gave it to Wait, she said.

She later posted the story on social media, where Oklahoma Atheists members saw it and decided to help the family.

“We had several people donate things and send her money through a PayPal,” said the group’s director, Red McCall, who said Christmas had become a secular holiday.

“Her Christmas was ruined,” he said. “The big message here is Tiffany was discriminated against, and if someone needs help we are going to help them. It doesn’t matter what their beliefs are.”

Atheists signs on People Mover buses in Anchorage

Posted by doctore0 on December 12, 2012

ANCHORAGE – Christians like to say that Jesus is “the reason for the season.”

But a group of atheists say no time of year should be free from “pagan reverie.”

To that end, Anchorage city buses are carrying some very non-traditional Christmas messages. The Freedom From Religion Foundation of Madison, Wisconsin, has spent decades fighting for the secularization of America.

Christ is Back in Christmas!

Posted by doctore0 on December 7, 2012

Create a problem to sell a solution. That’s Christianity – a simple con.

Christianity is based upon advocating the execution of an innocent man so that you can escape accountability. Is this a good message to celebrate and teach our children?

Atheist Brings “Festivus” to South Florida

Posted by doctore0 on December 7, 2012

festivuspoleAfter negotiating with elected officials and with help from the ACLU, corruption fighting atheist Chaz Stevens was allowed to install an eight feet tall Festivus pole outside of Deerfield Beach’s main fire station, located on the corner of US1 and Hillsboro Blvd.

Stevens’ Festivis pole is displayed among other holiday exhibits, including a manger and menorah.

Festivus, a secular holiday celebrated on December 23, commemorates the holiday season and avoids wanton commercialism. Festivus became part of worldwide popular culture after being featured on the Seinfeld episode “The Strike” where Frank Costanza noted, “No, instead, there’s a pole. It requires no decoration. I find tinsel distracting … It’s made from aluminum. Very high strength-to-weight ratio.
