A Deity Made of Chocolate Spurs a Religious Debate

Posted by doctore0 on February 10, 2015

hinduism-funnyAs religious questions go, it is a relatively small one.

But, inevitably, it must be asked: Is it O.K. to eat a chocolate statuette of your favorite holy figure?

The matter arose recently at Bond Street Chocolate, a bite-size East Village boutique that traffics in intricately detailed figurines of Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and the elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesh.

Last week, an organization called Universal Society of Hinduism issued a demand:

“Upset Hindus urge withdrawal of Lord Ganesh-shaped edible chocolate,” read the society’s Feb. 1 news release.

The owner of the store, Lynda Stern, was puzzled. For more than five years, she has been selling the gold-dusted Ganesh and his shelfmates, beside passion fruit bonbons and chocolate-coated wasabi peas, with barely a whiff of controversy.

In the release, the society’s president, Rajan Zed, wrote that Ganesh, the remover of obstacles, was “highly revered in Hinduism and was meant to be worshiped in temples or home shrines and not to be eaten casually.” The chocolate statues, he wrote, were an insult to Hindus

Posted by doctore0 on February 10, 2015

Crazy stuff… that is religion, pure crazy

alien-jesusThe internet blinked in disbelief today after a BBC programme held a serious discussion on whether Jesus and Buddha were aliens from other planets.

The 23-minute segment on the BBC’s The Big Questions TV show tackled the question: “Have beings from other planets guided our religions?”

The discussion on Sunday included the head of the Aetherius Society, which believes that Buddha, Jesus and Krishna came from outer space.

Vatican defends comments about ‘disciplining with justice’ after facing previous criticism from UN over attitude to corporal punishment

Pope Francis told parents it is OK to spank their children to discipline them – as long as their dignity is maintained.

Francis made the remarks this week during his weekly general audience, which was devoted to the role of fathers in the family.

Francis outlined the traits of a good father: one who forgives but is able to “correct with firmness” while not discouraging the child.

“One time, I heard a father in a meeting with married couples say ‘I sometimes have to smack my children a bit, but never in the face so as to not humiliate them’,” Francis said.

“How beautiful.” he added. “He knows the sense of dignity! He has to punish them but does it justly and moves on.”

The Rev Thomas Rosica, who collaborates with the Vatican press office, said the pope was obviously not speaking about committing violence or cruelty against a child but rather about “helping someone to grow and mature”.

WLC God Hears Your Super Bowl Prayers

Posted by doctore0 on January 30, 2015

NFL fans know it’s nearly impossible to get through a football game without reference to God. Whether Tebowing on the sidelines, giving a shoutout on ESPN, or pointing to heaven after a touchdown, plenty of players recognize that God’s a part of the game.

Christians need to stop acting like that’s a bad thing, according to apologist and theologian William Lane Craig. He’s the one they should be praying to and thanking, says Craig, a professor at Biola University’s Talbot School of Theology and author of Reasonable Faith.

CT’s Kate Shellnutt spoke with Craig about prayer, providence, and pigskin ahead of Sunday’s big game. (Craig, for the record, will be pulling for Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.)

Recent polls have found at least a quarter of Americans pray for sports teams, and that number is even higher among evangelicals. As a theologian, what do these stats tell you?

Doctor performed an exorcism on seriously ill patient telling her “god is your surgeon”

Posted by doctore0 on January 20, 2015

insane
An Irish-trained doctor performed an exorcism on a seriously ill patient after promising he could “heal” her without medication, a medical tribunal yesterday.

GP Dr Thomas O’Brien, 56, persuaded the mother of one to undergo the spiritual procedure at his local Pentecostal church after telling her: “God is your surgeon,” it was claimed.

During a four month period leading to the ceremony, O’Brien who qualified as a doctor from the National University of Ireland in 1982, subjected the patient who was in great pain after stomach surgery to “religious grooming”

He said the “devil was having a real go at her” and that she had “devil items” in her house, it was alleged.

The doctor further exploited her vulnerability by quoting the Bible at her, taking her to religious meetings, praying with her at home and even programming her television remote to satellite TV’s The Gospel Channel, it was said.
