Richard Dawkins takes forum down

Posted by doctore0 on February 23, 2010

Fucking stabbed us all in the back…; The message from Josh was basically; Fuck you all, the HUGE community here means nothing.
I like to think that Dawkins does not know about this crazy insane bs… that he will spank/fire Josh and apologise to the moderators/users + open the forum again, if not; well that’s just to bad for him.

    I still think that this is more Josh’s work than Richard’s. It just doesn’t sit well with the way that Richard has engaged with the forum in the past.

      Yea.. I can’t wait to hear what Dawkins will say about this issue.
      Alienating the whole community we had there;
      The forum was fun,educational, inspirational;
      It was the heart and brain of the site, now it’s dead. 😦

    It is good to see that all of us who have blogs report what happened. It is very important. Up to now, it has been me, you, Peter Harrison, Jerome as far as I know (I am certain there are more), but the news are picking up also on twitter (#timonenfail) and on facebook with the RDF Sanctuary group and other things.

    The forums are not dead, they are metamorphosing. While I understand the techs involved would have liked to keep the existing content, it’s just not possible due to the absolute mess the whole system has become. The new system is simpler, more efficient, and will scale MUCH better. It also focuses on quality rather than quantity, so each new thread will require a moderator to approve – after that comments are freely open (provided they stick within the usual guidelines). Seems like a good deal to me.

    This reaction from the community is way over the top.

    It’s not a community any more Askegg, the forum was killed, the forum was the community.

    They did lie to us the whole time… there is no excuse for this behaviour.

      I am not necessarily defending the way things have transpired, but I understand why it’s happened. From what I know, Richard Dawkins wanted to keep the focus on science and rational discourse and this was not the current state of the forum. There was no reasonable way to clean the existing system and achieve their goals, so the difficult decision to cease the current forum was taken, and the user accounts will be migrated to the new system.

      I have not been privy to the new system or how it works, so I cannot comment on that, but I know that Andrew, John, and Richard are acutely aware of the community and wish to retain it. However, sometimes measures must be taken which are difficult in the transition.
