I’m Not A Monster.

Posted by doctore0 on March 16, 2013

I’m(P.W. Swivel) tired of hearing about Atheists as a group. Its not a religion, a set of beliefs, or a moral identifier. Its an understanding about the absurd default position of religion. That’s all. Everyone is different.

Darwins Dangerous Idea – Body & Soul

Posted by doctore0 on February 28, 2011

Episode 1 Body and Soul

The first programme of Darwin’s Dangerous Idea explores the impact of Darwin’s ideas on religion and morality. Andrew Marr discovers that an important part of the Beagle’s mission was to return three natives to their homeland, Tierra del Fuego, at the southernmost tip of Argentina. Years before he reached the Galapagos, they raised questions in his mind about the fragility of civilisation and what it really means to be human. Marr explores how Darwin developed his ideas when he returned to Britain and finally unleashed his theory of evolution by natural selection on the world. Darwin’s ideas are taken up by many of the major thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud. We discover that his ideas helped motivate the Kaiser’s army in the First World War and would also help convince the United States government to drop its isolationist policy and enter the conflict. In the 20th century, we discover a growing backlash against Darwin’s ideas among fundamentalists from the world’s major religions. At the same time science has been showing that Darwin’s theory of natural selection holds sway over our behaviour – including our morality – as much as it does over the evolution of our bodies. There is significant scientific evidence that suggests that Darwin has returned humanity to nature, in all its wonder, its glory and its danger.

What Separates Us from Chimps? As It Turns Out, Not Much

Posted by doctore0 on February 27, 2011

Neurologist Robert Sapolsky explores the genetic differences between humans and chimps, and describes the few genes that make our species unique. Our two species share over ninety-eight percent of the same genes, with only one major trait separating us from other primates: an abundance of neurons in the brain.

“Take a chimp brain fetally and let it go two or three more rounds of division and you get a human brain instead,” says Sapolsky. “And, out come symphonies, ideologies and hopscotch.”

Voices of Reason — Sam Harris: The Moral Landscape

Posted by doctore0 on October 13, 2010

Questions of good and evil, and right and wrong, are commonly thought unanswerable by science. But in his new book “The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values,” Sam Harris argues that science can — and should — be an authority on moral issues, shaping human values and setting out what constitutes a good life.

The Center for Inquiry in New York City hosted Harris for a public lecture about his new book on Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m., at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. Question-and-answer and book signing sessions followed.

Spank Your Monkey

Posted by doctore0 on July 15, 2010

4 billion years of evolution is not easily overcome, but human history is littered with examples of individuals who said, “No”, to their inner ape, their instincts. It can be done. The trick is to SEE it first. Then you can resist….
