A sect named Defenders of Christ that was broken up in Mexico last month forced women to participate in orgies, discouraged baths and made people eat raw animal organs, the wife of a cult leader said Tuesday.

Mexican immigration authorities raided the sex-driven sect’s house in the northern state of Nuevo Laredo on January 25, rounding up 14 foreigners, including its Spanish leader Ignacio Gonzalez de Arriba, and 10 Mexicans.

Gonzalez de Arriba saw himself as the reincarnation of Christ and used the Internet to recruit adherents, offering classes on “bio-programming,” alternative health care, psychic powers and sexuality, according to the Victim Support Network, which helps people who flee sects.

“They broke you down, making you even doubt your own name,” Blanca Castro, who was married to a Venezuelan leader of the Defenders of Christ, told a news conference.

“They made me eat raw animal organs. And you know what? When you’re starving you’ll eat anything,” the Mexican woman said, adding that sect leaders told followers that hygiene was a waste of time.

Castro, who married Losanger Jose Arenas Segovia in 2009, said she was raped, forced into group sex sessions, locked up and roughed up. She lived with the sect for 10 months in 2010 until she escaped and made her way to Peru.

Gonzalez de Arriba is being investigated over allegation that minors were forced to participate in sexual acts.

Cult leader ‘Little Pebble’ to be refused parole

A cult leader who used his influence to rape several minors has not changed his behaviour and should not be granted parole, the NSW State Parole Authority says.

William Kamm, a 62-year-old self-proclaimed prophet who claims to receive divine instruction from the Virgin Mary, was jailed in 2005 for at least three-and-a-half years for raping and assaulting a teenager in 1993.

In 2007, a seven-and-a-half-year non-parole period with a maximum of 10 years was added to his sentence for other sex offences.

The cult leader was convicted of five counts of sexual intercourse with a minor by a person in authority, four counts of aggravated indecent assault against a minor and one count of aggravated indecent assault.

As much of the western world prepares for Halloween parties and celebrations on Wednesday, Metropolitan Archbishop Andzej Dzięga of the north-western Szczecin-Kamień dioceses sent a letter to be read out to congregations on Sunday warning against introducing a “world of darkness, including devils, vampires and demons” to school kids in the name of “fun”.

“It is with growing sadness that we see in the last few years a trend of so-called Halloween celebrations growing in Poland. I am particularly concerned about such initiatives [being introduced] in school, where only mature attitudes should shape the social, intellectual and spiritual growth of the younger generation,” writes the archbishop.

“This kind of fun, tempting children like candy, also poses the real possibility of great spiritual damage, even destroying spiritual life,” he adds, warning of the dangers of “irresponsible and anti-Christian fun.”

Halloween is also the “promotion of paganism” and a “culture of death” he claims.

American-style Halloween parties have grown in popularity in Poland since the fall of communism and religious figures fear that it is competing with the Roman Catholic All Saints’ Day on 1 November, when family’s graves are decorated with wreaths and small lanterns.

Richard Dawkins calls Mitt Romney ‘gullible fool’ over Mormon faith

Richard Dawkins on Sunday accused Mitt Romney of being a “massively gullible fool” as he launched into a furious tirade against the Republican’s Mormon faith.

Britain’s most prominent atheist attacked the core tenets of Mr Romney’s religion, saying that the Church of Latter Day Saints’ founding prophet was “a fraud” and that the presidential contender was “too stupid to see it”.

“No matter how much you agree with Romney’s economic policy, can you really vote for such a massively gullible fool?” asked Prof Dawkins during an outburst on Twitter that lasted several hours.

The Oxford academic focused his criticism on the Church’s belief that its founder, Joseph Smith, was visited by an angel in 1820s New York, who guided him to a set of golden plates buried in a hill.

Smith claimed to have translated runes engraved on the plates, and compiled them into the Book of Mormon. The text describes how Jesus Christ appeared in the United States after the Crucifixion and how Adam and Eve went to the site of present-day Missouri after being expelled from the Garden of Eden.

Prof Dawkins said Smith was a “19th century charlatan” and that the Book’s text appeared to be written in a falsified ancient tone, unlike the Bible and Koran which were “written in the language of their time”
