Police to lift lid on murky world of bogus faith healers who promise cures for huge sums of money

Posted by Mr DoctorE on September 15, 2014

… all faith healers are bogus!

godscamPolice hope to lift the lid on the murky world of ‘faith healers’ who promise cures for everything from cancer to marriage breakdown – for huge sums of money.

A team of officers has been put together to investigate the scale of the fraud in the city for the first time.

The Leicester Mercury is aware of a number of cases of people handing over tens of thousands of pounds to criminals who then say meaningless prayers or perform rituals for them.

An unknown number of tricksters are operating in the city, advertising in foreign language newspapers or by putting business cards through letterboxes or leaving the on car windscreens.

Many claim to be able to use prayer to lift curses, heal broken marriages and solve financial problems.

Others say they can cure illnesses including cancer and HIV.

Inspector Ben Gillard, commander of Leicester’s Spinney Hill Park police station, said the team needed the community’s help to trace the perpetrators.

Insp Gillard said: “People are being exploited and handing over large sums of money to these people.

“We want to work with the faith community leaders and other people in the community because this is not solely a police issue.

Atheist US Air Force sergeant to take military to court over requirement to take oath with ‘so help me God’

Posted by Mr DoctorE on September 10, 2014

undergawdThe US Air Force has told a sergeant he will have to leave the military unless he agrees to take an oath with the phrase “so help me God”.

The atheist airman was last month denied his request to re-enlist because of his refusal to swear to God.

His lawyer, Monica Miller from the American Humanist Association, said he was now poised to take the military to court.

“We have not received word from the Air Force regarding our letter,” she said.

“It has not indicated a willingness to settle out of court.”

With the deadline for re-enlisting expiring in November, the technical sergeant at Creech Air Force base in Nevada, whose name has not been released, will be forced to sue the government in a federal court, Ms Miller said.

In the past, an airman could opt for an alternative phrase and omit the words “so help me God,” but the US Air Force changed its policy in October 2013.

The other branches of the American military do not require the reference to God and make the phrase optional.

“This is the only branch to my knowledge that’s actually requiring everyone in all instances to use the religious language,” Ms Miller said.

She said the requirement violated the US Constitution, which bars religious tests to hold office or other positions.

Hercules (aka Kevin Sorbo) Chiming In Against Atheists

Posted by Mr DoctorE on August 28, 2014

“God Is Not Dead actor Kevin Sorbo provided one answer to the question he has been asking repeatedly on the film’s DVD promotional tour — “Why are atheists so angry at something they don’t believe in?” — on Christian radio host Rick Wiles’ show Tuesday.

Atheists, he claimed, secretly believe that God exists, and are upset with him because they know he is going to judge them. They are a “small group of people, and they get on Fox or CNN and they rant and they rave,” Sorbo said, “and I pretty much based my character [in God Is Not Dead] off of these guys that I see who are just angry — they’re just filled with anger and hatred.”

“On the one hand,” he continued, “I feel sorry for them, but then I kind of laugh at them. Why would anybody spend so much time ranting and raving about something they don’t believe in?”

After a brief digression about how “the chipping away of religion” has “brought the country down,” Sorbo claimed that “85 or 90 percent of the people in this country” believe in God, and that they’re offended when atheists use the courts to compel Christians to respect the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause.”

Warren atheist sues to set up alternative to prayer station at city hall

Posted by Mr DoctorE on July 24, 2014

A Warren atheist filed a federal lawsuit today saying his free speech rights were violated when Warren Mayor Jim Fouts turned down his request to place what he called a “reason station” inside city hall, where a prayer station has existed for years.

Douglas Marshall, a member of Freedom From Religion, made a request with the city in April to put up a table inside the atrium of city hall to promote free thought, use of reason and logic and separation of church and state. Fouts denied the request, saying it would disrupt the prayer station in violation of the constitutional right to freedom of religion.

The lawsuit against Fouts and the city was filed in U.S. District Court by the American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and Freedom From Religion Foundation on behalf of Marshall.

It seeks a preliminary injunction requiring the city and Fouts to allow Marshall to operate his proposed reason station in the atrium. If the court decides the prayer station, which a local church group has operated in the atrium since 2009, represents government speech, it should issue a preliminary injunction prohibiting its continued operation, according to court documents.
