Newly discovered circular carvings that are mostly likely meant to represent female genitalia have been recorded as the oldest rock art ever found in Europe.
The carvings, resembling the vulva, were uncovered at a site called Abri Castanet in France. They are believed to be about 37,000-years-old.
The findings have been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The creators of the carvings were a group called the Aurignacians – the first humans in Europe, according to LiveScience. They are known to have painted, sculpted and made carvings.
The vulva shapes may reflect the Aurignacians’ preoccupation with fertility and the mystery of birth, according to study researcher Randall White.
Homo sapiens did not leave any traces of art until about 40,000 years ago, so the Aurignacians’ work is believed to be groundbreaking.
