Tens of thousands of barefoot Philippine Catholics joined a religious procession in Manila yesterday for a centuries-old black statue of Jesus Christ believed to possess miraculous powers.
Almost 400 people were injured or fainted in the crush to get near the 404-year-old Black Nazarene. One man suffered third-degree burns to his feet, while another suffered bone fractures.
The annual parade of the wooden life- size statue atop a gilded carriage around the downtown Quiapo district is one of the most spectacular and extreme shows of faith in the largely Catholic country.
The carriage was pulled along in a sea of devotees, with thousands scrambling to get near the statue or touch the ropes.
The faithful threw white towels or hankies to those in front, who wiped them on the statue and tossed them back.
“When I saw the Nazareno I immediately knew that my prayers will be answered,” 59-year-old Linda Meme said, tears welling in her eyes.
